Lori Jill Isenstadt from All About Breastfeeding is on a mission to normalize breastfeeding..... all around the world. Learn from mothers who are actively breastfeeding, sharing their personal stories of breastfeeding with ease and babies who just know exactly what to do. Hear intimate stories from mothers about their struggles and pain with breastfeeding. Everyday moms sharing extraordinary stories of what life was like behind their breastfeeding doors. Get help with common concerns such as low milk supply, oversupply, babies who are tongue and lip tied, premature babies, sick babies who are breastfeeding as well as babies who have had surgeries such as heart and cleft surgeries.   1.  Colostrum is milk.  You are already producing colostrum halfway through your pregnancy. Your milk is in at birth.
  2. Not everyone needs to take galactagogues
  3. You can and should continue breastfeeding during colds and flu and other illnesses
  4. Breast milk is not always white. It can be blue, green, yellow (ahem- gold!), pink, or orange depending what you eat or drink. Don’t worry, it’s OK for baby.
  5. Your breast milk is constantly changing to meet the needs of your growing baby. From month-to-month, throughout the week, day-to-day, and even throughout a single feeding.

She is the founder and Executive Director of The New York Milk Bank and has a private practice specializing in breastfeeding in Irvington, NY.  She formed a team of 5 women who over 3 years developed the New York Milk Bank which officially opened its doors two weeks ago in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York . The New York Milk Bank will provide safely pasteurized donor human milk to premature and sick babies in hospitals and in the community throughout New York State and beyond.

Her breastfeeding story began with her first 2 children, long before we met. There was a 7 year gap between her second and third baby. With Megan and Toby, she pursued very traditional medicine. Whatever she was told to do, she always followed her doctors advise and never questioned anything she was told. She did not realize at the time, but following some of her pediatricians advise is what compromised her breastfeeding and was a factor in her low milk supply with her first 2 babies.

I do have to say that some things are so much better as some of the most craziest things have, thank goodness finally dissapeared from textbooks and from other moms sharing this poor advice - things like:  you gotta spend weeks before the birth toughening up your nipples  for breastfeeding by rubbing them with a washcloth for 10 minutes every day all the way to -  you have to wash your nipples before breastfeeding.

The breast is an amazing gland which function is to feed our babies.  When we think about breastfeeding, it is reasonable to make an assumption that we would use both breasts to feed our baby.  And yet, sometimes this is not the case.  There are quite a few reasons why a women would not be able use both her breasts to feed her baby.

Martha Paynter is a staff nurse at the IWK Health Centre Family Newborn Care Unit and the Nova Scotia Women’s Choices (Abortion) Clinic. She is a PhD Candidate in Nursing at Dalhousie University. In 2012, she founded Women’s Wellness Within (WWW), a registered non-profit organization that provides support, education and advocacy with criminalized women who are pregnant or parenting young children in Nova Scotia. For nearly ten years, she chaired the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund (LEAF) Halifax branch. She became a nurse to advance practice, policy and research that addresses social (in)justice and protects reproductive rights.
