Your baby may be too tired to breastfeed well and rather than label your baby as a lazy eater, I want you to think: Why is my baby sleeping on job? Why, oh why, when my baby gets onto the breast, does he or she keep falling asleep. Rather than asking the question: Why is my baby a lazy eater, I want you to think: Why is my baby falling asleep instead of eating?
Breastfeeding is a natural thing to do, however, it does not necessarily come naturally for most of us.
As a lactation consultant, I have long since recognized the lack of information mothers have about breastfeeding. Not only about early breastfeeding difficulties, but also how this impacts their postpartum lifestyle. Breastfeeding comes fairly easy for some mothers and I want them to know that it may not come easy for your sister or best friend. I want you to know that you can be of great help to them. You can provide emotional support, practical help and suggest they seek professional help. For some mothers, early breastfeeding is more challenging than they thought it would be. It is very emotional and exhausting for some mothers. When this happens, we tend to become very overwhelmed, isolate ourselves and some mothers become depressed.

Bottle refusal - What can you do?
The reality is that summertime with kids is a lot of work and taking them to the pool can be
exhausting. Talia talk about the added work load of having a baby with a helmet on when you
take them out in the heat and keeping the helmet dry during pool time.
When Henry began daycare, he just would not take a bottle. Talia hoped that he would learn to take the bottle and be happy with this too! When she realized he had absolutely not interest and we talked about reverse cycling, Talia decided to change her mindset. Rather than be upset and worried about him, she decided to go with the flow. This does mean that he makes up for those lost feedings by having more frequent feedings when he is with him Mommy and this includes him waking up at nighttime when before he was sleeping longer periods. Talia talks about how she has adjusted to this and also talks about other parents response when she says that he is not taking the bottle. Henry is a well fed baby and is gaining well and is also a very happy baby while in daycare. As long as he gets his naps in, he is a very happy baby.
We also got into a great conversation about expectations as parents and how our kids fit into our life.
Expecting to have a lot of control and structuring your whole day like you did before, often does not work out too well.
There is a mindset shift that needs to happen as new parents so you can be happy and enjoy your baby.

Rachel is a stay at home mom of 2. Layla is 3 and Levi is 5 months old. Her and her husband live in Rexburg Idaho. She has 2 sisters and is the middle child, which we both agree is the best - as we are well-adjusted.
Her family on both sides all live within a 20 minute drive of each other. She can drop the kids off at the grandparents and her favorite thing to do is go home and nap. As she says: She does not want to set the world on fire - just get in a nap.

Being a PA, she can appreciate the quandary that other physicians are in. You want to balance optimism with being realistic. You can be optimist and the patient can still be empowered but still be realistic at the same time. Talia has a good point when she states: Nobody is going to get anywhere if we are lying to ourselves all the time.

The Friday shows are going to be great because you get the best of both worlds. All my expertise with newborn parenting and breastfeeding experience. My kids are older and I have had many experiences that I can share w ith you. At the same time, having Talia as a co-host makes so me of the concerns with newborn parenting incredibly relatable because she is going through these challenges in real time.
