Grew up in Palo Alto, CA in 1973. Her mom was a SAHM and a dad who worked in Silicon Valley. Kate describes her mom as someone who had wonderlust and was always looking for adventure and frequently took Kate along for the ride. This helped give Kate a wonderful role model and gave her a sense that anything is possible. Her mom did not play by the rules and while she is not as adventurous her mom, but made her comfortable with taking the risks.

Jessica is from New Jersey. She always had an interest in womens issue and social justice issues. She was a Peace Corp volunteer, helped start up and franchise a non-profit organization, has her MBA, led her to Tom’s Shoes and built and ran the One for One program. She was the first woman to have a baby in the job. Her kids are now 5 and 2 years old now. There was so much to know about being a breastfeeding mom and pumping and returning to work and coordinating it all. She likes solving problems and the information she desperately needed, she just could not find. So, she decided to be the one to write the book she could not find. My first big trip once I returned to work was taking a trip to Nepal, without my son. I learned a lot of practical tips along the way. Like what to do when you are in a hotel room and they tell you they don’t have another refrigerator. Well, you lie! Tell them it is a medical need because when you ask nicely it is easy for them to turn you down. So you lie a little. And a medical need is respected and all of a sudden you will get a refrigerator.

Having worked with moms during 20 something holiday seasons, I have a pretty good idea about how stressful this time of year can be for you. On the one hand, when you realized you were going to give birth around holiday time, you had daydreams of how wonderful it would be to spend your baby’s first holiday season with friends and family. This evokes all warm and fuzzy feelings and excitement. This is absolutely true, it can be warm and fuzzy and so exciting. It also has a strong tendency to be anywhere between just a little bit stressful to kind of sort but doable stress and all the way to: this is so stressful I just can’t wait for all of this to be over

The subject of medication and breastfeeding safety can be very confusing. During your pregnancy you may have been told that you cannot take a specific medication as it is not safe for your baby growing in utero. Now that you are breastfeeding, you find out that this same medication is safe to take while breastfeeding. You just shake your head as you just don't know what to think I can totally appreciate why this might be confusing to you.

The hospital has since been renovated and redone the layout, but when she delivered there the NICU was several floors down from the pp unit. In those first hours, when all she could think was this was a punishment for something that I did wrong. What a cruel, cruel, cruel thing to be able to hear other babies and she could not even hold mine. Her second birth was with a midwifery practice as well as my other babies. This time was in a hospital and there was an LC and she said and was sympathetic and acknowledged how difficult this task was wanting to breastfeed a baby who was in NICU. She brought me a pump and so she pumped during those early hours. At least this time, because I had pumped at work before. The breastpump was not a foreign object to her. You don’t grow up learning how to use a breastpump. Once you get it down pat, it comes easily as habitual as brushing your teeth and flossing. She brought me an electric pump and I had only used a manual pump. I told her I always had used the Avent isis pump and she said oh no that is not going to help you with a NICU baby. Christine does say that she hated the electric pump and wound up using the manual pump. It was so comfortable and it is what she was used to and did her best with. By the time she was discharged, she was still not breastfeeding.

Christine grew up in Smithtown, NY. She grew up with her parents, one sister who is 2 years younger than she is and a family dog. When Christine was younger her best days were when her parents would take her to 2 different libraries in the same day. She has always been an avid reader, a major, major library user,a huge fan of the library, and has written poetry. She always knew she wanted to be a writer or do something with books and she also thought a lot about teaching. Christine got a minor in journalism and her major is in English Literature. Michelle Beckner is a certified nutrition consultant and a mom of two. Michelle spent some time teaching starting solids, but has found her true passion to be supporting moms who are breastfeeding babies with food allergies and intolerances. Michelle herself has nursed both of her babies through dairy allergies and other food intolerances. She has recently weaned her youngest who is dairy egg and corn free. Michelle works to educate new and expecting moms on how to spot symptoms of allergies. She also works one on one and in groups to guide and encourage moms through this period of their breastfeeding journey.

Becky Ramsdell is a Peoria, Arizona woman who is now a mom of two after going through 10 years of infertility and failed adoptions in the process of building their family. She had struggles with breastfeeding both of her babies but was ultimately able to work through those struggles and nurse each of them for their first year. She went back to work when each of them was 3 months old, so there was a lot of pumping and milk freezing involved. Now she loves to share her story of hope and encouragement with other moms who are facing similar challenges with establishing nursing with their babies
